“The Odd Brain”: the Book by Stephen Juan

This a clip from a preview of the book “the Odd Brain” by Stephen Juan

Michael doesn’t actually have 2 brains, but in certain ways his left and right hemispheres function independently, so it is a fair metaphor, I think.   I found this clip while searching google for “boy with two brains” and while it is not entirely relevant to Michael or ACC, I find it interesting and part of my mission here is to raise awareness about the brain in general but more specifically the progress being made in brain therapy and research. I realize that is a pretty tall order, but I’m just doing what I can and I hope you all will click on the side bar above and choose  to “subscribe ” so you can get updates from us via email. Origins

Originally, I imagined making an instructional video about Michael, his condition and the type of care he receives so if, for some reason, I was unable to care for him, at least their would be some idea of the nuances of his routine. I soon figured out that a blog would give me time to chronicle, journal and develop the idea. And find the right angels who want to help, etc., anyway, I’d waited for awhile before I started asking around for help with the camera work, with the intention of shooting while I was doing the normal daily stuff of everyday. Rather than bring in a cameraman, I just began shooting some footage of myself and Michael making spiral noodles, which also acted as a quasi-impromptu ad for the Present Moment Cafe (which I love), as well as giving me the opportunity to fulfill my life-long dream of having a cooking show… well maybe not lifelong dream, but it’s been on my mind for a lot longer than youtube has been around, so I figure, hey, everybody else is doing it, so why can’t I? I’d posted it previously, find it here. I intend to shoot more video of Michael and our activities, but there is so much going on, I can’t even begin to tell you. I’ll attempt to keep this about Michael, while knowing that my stuff will creep into the blog, all of our family and financial issues, etc. play into our quality of life, and hence Michaels development. I’ll strive to keep it relevant.
I’d like you all to know that I think he is doing amazingly well. We’re expecting a new wheelchair for him within the next few months, and that’s a blessing from Medicaid. I will be starting a fund for some kind of trainer/walker type of device if I can’t get it funded thru Medicaid or Childrens Medical Services. I would like to have one for him today, but I can’t say that the physical therapist would say he is ready for it. I honestly don’t even know if they have that in mind for him so it’s another thing for the list of things to do… and so it goes…

Some Video and more

Hi! We’ve had a busy start to our holiday season. Michael has been making incredible progress lately with his standing and hip/knee flexion. He is so excited to be bearing his own weight and find his center or Dan-tian (Field of Cinnabar:A Daoist term referring to a center of energy located approximately two inches below the navel and inside the lower abdomen) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dantian
Which I find nothing short of miraculous and have been so pleased and proud to see him empowered like this and it really shows in his face. I worked on some collages of Michael so I’ll add them here and there is a video of short clips and pics of Michael all up to age 4 or so. It’s not long and it’s so cute, and oh yeah, thanks to Al DiMeola for the sound track that I don’t have the rights to! It’s just a short little clip of “the boo” or “Mikee-boo”

Thanksgiving Day

It’s Thanksgiving Day and I’m very grateful. We’ve had wonderful food and enjoyed our friends and now we’re just chillin’. So much I have to share with you, it will all have to wait till I’m more together… maybe after Thanksgiving? yeah right!

Another GIF animation of Michael enjoying himself with a box of tea bags. He’s also very stimulated by piles of small articles of clothing like socks… anyway for some reason I don’t think these shots would be as fun if it was video, it’s simpler but sweeter.
Enjoy!

Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum

Here are some sites that may provide you some more info about ACC

Definition

Agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) is an abnormality of brain structure, present at birth, that is characterized by partial or complete absence of the corpus callosum. The corpus callosum is a bundle of nerve fibers that connects the two hemispheres (halves) of the brain and allows information to pass back and forth between both sides.
